Our teachers can help you to understand the combination of cultural knowledge and language you need to communicate in social situations.

Here are the social English lessons we offer. Each one is 30 minutes and includes a written summary of the topic and a quiz so you can test yourself.

Specialised social English lessons

Greetings etc formal vs informal (BL)
In this lesson, you will learn and practise how to greet people and introduce yourself with language that fits the situation.

Restaurant language (BL)
This lesson looks at common phrases used in restaurants and bars.

Using tag questions (LI)
In this lesson, you will learn to use tag questions such as It’s a nice day today, isn’t it?

Appropriate responses (LI)
This lesson focuses on the correct way to respond in conversations to show you are listening and that you are interested.

Small talk strategies (LI)
In this lesson, you will look at strategies for starting and developing small talk.

Typical safe subjects (IU)
This lesson looks at the kind of subjects that are common and acceptable for small talk.

Diplomacy – using it and recognising and understanding it (UA)
In this lesson, you will learn how to understand indirect or diplomatic language and how to use it when necessary.

Dealing with sensitive topics (UA)
This lesson focuses on how to respond in conversations about sensitive topics and how to change the subject in a diplomatic way.

Humour (A)
In this lesson, you will discuss why humour is such a difficult area in multicultural environments and how to deal with it.
